Messi is Argentina's all-time leading goalscorer and appearance maker. His playing style, characterized by his small stature and exceptional left-footed dribbling skills, earned him comparisons to his compatriot Diego Maradona, who named him his successor. Following his debut in 2005, Messi became the youngest Argentine to play and score in a FIFA World Cup in Germany in 2006. He went on to lead Argentina to three consecutive finals as the team's captain, the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the 2015 and 2016 Copa Amrica, winning the Golden Ball on two occasions. Despite announcing his international retirement in 2016, Messi led his country to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, a third-place finish at the 2019 Copa Amrica, and a victory in the 2021 Copa Amrica, where he won both the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot, resulting in his record seventh Ballon d'Or in 2021.
